Comcast Business has partnered with Sabey Data Centers to provide local businesses with private connectivity to Sabey's facilities in Tukwila and Quincy, Washington.
The companies described Washington state as having a "booming" data center market. This has resulted in large part from the trend of more California companies, including Silicon Valley technology firms, wanting to relocate their data center storage and hosting needs to Washington due to the higher energy costs, seismic activity issues, tougher regulatory climate and other challenges in their home state.
Sabey Data Centers has responded to this trend by bringing to market a combined 2.2 million square feet of data center space throughout the state of Washington, and is now looking to Comcast Business to help with connectivity and IT continuity via the network operator's hybrid fiber coax (HFC) network.
In addition to delivering private Ethernet and IP connectivity to data centers for local businesses, the HFC network includes diverse 100 Gbps connections through separate network locations in its HFC system to provide back-up connectivity through alternate path routing in the event of an outage on a particular route.
As part of the partnership, Comcast Business will also offer Sabey customers a non-internet “on-ramp” to popular cloud services like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and IBM Cloud via the Comcast Business Direct-to-Cloud platform. In addition, businesses already using Comcast Business Ethernet and IP services for their business telecom services will be able to use those services to connect to Sabey’s data centers.
“CIOs and IT decision makers are often challenged with managing connections to multiple data centers and cloud solutions, managing application performance as well as troubleshooting latency and throughput issues from their data center connections,” said John Ford, VP and general manager of Sabey Data Centers, Seattle, in a statement. “Comcast Business’ data center connectivity helps our customers simplify their workloads by providing direct access on a network that can be tied to a business’s physical location.”

Scott Woodard, director of sales engineering for Comcast Business’ WA Region, added in his own statement: “Comcast Business is focused on empowering businesses with a choice in hybrid IT solutions and massive Ethernet network reach. Our goal is to connect data centers and cloud services to more than one million Ethernet-enabled buildings and businesses nationwide.”
It's shaping up as a busy time for cable TV companies' aspirations in business markets. Cox Communications earlier in the week announced an edge computing unit. For its part, Comcast Business just last week teamed up with Versa Networks to grow its Secure Access Service Edge capabilities.
